Viscosity: What is it?

Viscosity is one of the fundamental properties of plastic materials, especially during processing such as extrusion. It refers to the internal resistance of a material to flow when subjected to external forces. In other words, it indicates how "thick" or "fluid" a material is when it moves under pressure. High viscosity means the material is more resistant to flow, while low viscosity indicates that the material moves more easily.

Factors that influence the viscosity of plastic materials

  • Temperature: At higher temperatures, the viscosity of plastic materials tends to decrease, making the material more fluid and easier to process. Conversely, at lower temperatures, viscosity increases, making the material thicker and harder to process.
  • Chemical composition: The presence of additives, fillers, or different polymers can alter the viscosity of a material. For example, the addition of mineral fillers or additives can increase viscosity.
  • Polymer molecularity: Polymers with longer chains tend to have higher viscosity because the polymer chains interlock and hinder the material's movement.
  • Deformation rate: Viscosity can also vary depending on the rate at which the material is deformed. Viscoelastic materials, for instance, behave differently based on the flow rate.

Importance of viscosity in the extrusion process

Controlling viscosity is critical to obtaining a final product with the desired properties. High viscosity can make extrusion difficult, leading to blockages or flow problems. On the other hand, low viscosity can compromise product quality, with risks of inhomogeneity and poor strength.
